The Project

Mr Shah contacted us to replace the ageing roof on his property along Addiscombe Road in Croydon. The existing roof had reached the end of its lifespan, showing visible signs of wear such as cracked tiles and poor weatherproofing. He wanted a complete roof replacement that would not only restore the property’s protection but also improve its appearance and energy efficiency.

Our Recommendation

After a thorough roof inspection, we recommended a new roof installation using 49s-style concrete tiles. These tiles are known for their strength, classic profile, and long-lasting performance, making them an ideal choice for a property of this style. Their attractive finish would give the roof a smart, traditional look while providing exceptional weather resistance.

To enhance the roof’s performance, we specified the use of a new breathable felt membrane to improve ventilation and prevent condensation within the roof space. We also installed treated wooden battens to serve as secure anchor points for the new tiles, ensuring a solid and even structure.

In addition, we recommended Code 4 lead flashing for all necessary junctions to ensure watertight seals around chimneys, valleys, and roof edges. To complete the installation, we suggested a dry ridge system, providing a strong, maintenance-free ridge line that resists wind uplift and eliminates the need for traditional mortar bedding.

The Installation

Our team began by carefully removing the old roof covering and inspecting the existing structure to ensure it was sound. Once cleared, we fitted a new breathable felt underlay, allowing moisture to escape while keeping the interior of the property protected from external elements.

Next, treated wooden battens were installed and securely fixed into place, creating a durable framework for the new tiles. The 49s-style concrete tiles were then laid in precise alignment, ensuring a neat, consistent pattern and a tight, weatherproof fit across the entire roof.

We then fitted new Code 4 lead flashing around the chimney and other key areas, expertly shaped and installed to ensure a perfect watertight seal. Finally, we completed the installation with a dry ridge system, offering excellent ventilation along the roof ridge and eliminating future maintenance issues associated with mortar deterioration.

Once all works were finished, the site was tidied and all waste materials were removed, leaving the property clean and ready to enjoy.

The Result

In just seven days, Mr Shah’s property on Addiscombe Road in Croydon was transformed with a brand-new, high-performance roof. The 49s-style concrete tiles give the home a refreshed, timeless appearance, while the combination of breathable felt, wooden battens, Code 4 lead, and a dry ridge system ensures lasting protection and strength.

The new roof not only enhances the property’s kerb appeal but also provides improved ventilation, weather resistance, and long-term reliability. Mr Shah was delighted with the result, confident that his home is now well-protected and looking better than ever.
